CONSULTANCY FOR THE REVIEW OF NIGERIA’S COMMITMENTS TO NDCS

The African Activists for Climate Justice Project has a specific goal of amplifying and uniting the voices in Africa that are demanding that women, youth and local communities in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia and South Africa can defend and realize their human rights and live a decent and dignified life in a healthy and sustainable environment, withing the context of the climate emergency.
The project strategic objective is to have a strong and inclusive African movement that has mobilized citizens, companies and government to advance climate justice.

Status of the Nigerian NDCs
It has been seven years since the signing of the Paris Agreement already. At the time of signing, the benchmark year was year 2030 which clearly shows that we have less than eight (8) years to take serious climate action. The NDCs was reviewed in 2021 and Nigeria’s unconditional commitment was reviewed upward from 45% to 47%. Again, the reviewed NDCs showed that the energy sector contributed more than 60% of total emissions in the country. Moreso, the agricultural sector contributes significantly to the emission level. Also, the reviewed NDCs captured the emission from the waste materials.
